Looking to start a blog with the WordPress platform?

You’ve come to the right place.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this article:

Step 1: Pick and register a name for your blog

Step 2: Choose a website host

Step 3: Install WordPress

Step 4: Add plugins

Step 5: Select a Theme

Step 6: Write your first post

Step 7: Write more posts and tell everyone about your new blog

What is WordPress?

It’s one of the most popular blogging platforms for bloggers and solopreneurs.

Because WordPress is easy to use, you can customize it to your own liking and it has many different plugins you can use for your blogging success.

No need to learn how to code.

You can change themes, create landing pages, use timers, add opt-in forms, and more by using plugins.

But first things first…

Step 1: Pick and register a name for your blog

You need to pick a domain name for your blog and get it registered.

I use Namecheap because like its name says it’s cheap.

It’s a lot cheaper than a lot of the other providers out there in the marketplace.

Plus their customer service is awesome!

You can go to a live chat to solve any technical issues you may have.

So go ahead and register your domain name.

Pick something easy to remember

Step 2: Choose a Website host

Now it’s time to get a web hosting provider.

You need somewhere to host your website/blog on the internet and that’s why you need a web host.

Again I use Namecheap because its pricing is competitive and its customer service is responsive.

It also loads its webpages fast, which you will need for a good reader and customer experience.

Fast loading pages is also one criteria for your blog to have SEO benefits.

You want to find a host who you can live chat with because trust me, you will run into technical difficulties.

I had an SSL issue once, and tried to fix it myself. After struggling for an hour with the issue I contacted Namecheap via live chat.

Their support rep fixed it for me from their end.

Now that is what I call fantastic customer service!

Step 3: Install WordPress

It’s time to install WordPress

Login to your Cpanel from your hosting account dashboard and install the WordPress software.

How you access it, will look different from the different providers, but all will allow you to install WordPress from its Cpanel.

Just look for the famous WordPress logo inside your Cpanel dashboard.

And just like that, your WordPress blog will be live after installation.

Step 4: Install some handy plugins

Here are some plugins that will come in handy for you:

Classic Editor – Allows you to use the old editor. It’s much easier to use than the newer version to add your text and images or HTML code.

Easy Affiliate Links – a good plugin to help you shorten and manage your affiliate links.

Head, Footer, and Post Injections – a really useful plugin that allows you to easily insert code on your blog like Google Analytics or any social media codes.

Step 5: Select a Theme

You can easily start blogging using a free WordPress theme.

However, you will find that free themes are limited.

Free themes don’t allow you to customize the theme or layout of your blog or posts.

Paid themes have a more professional appearance and give you more options to customize your blog layout.

This blog uses Thrive Themes because apart from giving it a nice, professional-looking appearance. Thrive Themes are focused on conversions.  Converting your readers to subscribers, and leads into sales.

You can use it to:

  • capture leads
  • create sales pages
  • do split testing
  • create a membership site
  • deliver your online course
  • create quizzes for engagement
  • add timers for scarcity

Here’s a walkthrough of how to use the Theme Builder.

It lets you drag and drop blocks within the pages and posts:
